Born January 3, 1943, in Grand Haven, Michigan, the seventh of nine children to Marcus P. and Casimira (nee Kufta) Mierle, Marcus resided in Spring Lake, Michigan. He attended local schools, the first being a rural one-room for first through eighth grades. After high school, he proudly served as a Navy hospital corpsman stationed with the U.S. Marine Corps. After his service, he managed properties in the retail business and the hotel industry in locations around the country. Prior to retirement, he finished his professional life in property management with the University of Chicago.
Marcus met and married his dear wife, Vicki Riordan, in the Chicago area where they both worked, moving to southwest Michigan after retirement. They enjoyed traveling with national parks, state capitol buildings, and botanical gardens being favorite draws, but they were not afraid to “get off the beaten path” when some other venues caught their eye, which they often did.
Retirement let him volunteer in the art communities where he got to meet and talk to nice people (artists and patrons) from around the world. He was always a “people person.” Although not an artist himself, he had a lifelong passion for collecting a wide variety of art. His other activities included gardening, puzzles, cooking, fishing, theater, and card playing. He loved to sing (not especially well, but definitely loud) even early on with a barbershop chorus. He was a multi-gallon blood donor because he felt someone always needed it and he had it to give.
He was a member of the American Legion, Post 568 in Stevensville; past member of the New Buffalo and St. Joseph River Yacht Clubs; and SW Michigan Newcomers Club.
Marcus is survived by his wife, Vicki, three step-children, Kelly Riordan Horwitz (Paul), and their children Samantha and Isaac, Birmingham, AL; Matthew Riordan (Meredith), Cuyahoga Falls, OH; and Shannon Riordan (Jolene), Chicago, IL; his sister C. Joan Reeg, Norton Shores, MI; brothers Larry (Jane), Spring Lake, MI; Gerald, Merrit Island, FL; and Gregory (Shelley), Bracebridge, Ont. Canada. He also had many nephews and nieces across the country. He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters, Monica Okkonen, Marcia Beihl, and Rita Mierle. Another sister Sr. Paula Mierle, S.J., passed away just after Marcus on March 15, 2024.
