Margaret's Obituary
Maggie was a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph Catholic High School in St. Joseph. She began working in the office of Dwan’s Home Canning Co., Inc. right after graduating from High School and worked there for 5 years. On May 1, 1954, she married Fred Slavicek, and they began their life together in the house which they built in St. Joseph Township. After their youngest child entered kindergarten, Maggie went to work at the Fifth District Court in St. Joseph and retired from there in 1995 after almost 24 years of service. She enjoyed collecting postcards of Berrien County and, since she had worked for the County, she and Fred toured the entire state, taking her picture in front of each of the 83 county courthouses. After retirement, one of her hobbies was ‘going out to lunch’ with her classmates, her pinochle group, and the Courthouse retirees. Maggie loved music, especially that of Sousa, Strauss and Andre’ Rieu. She was very proud of her children’s and grandchildren’s accomplishments and enjoyed attending their baseball and soccer games, and their band, orchestra and choral programs at their various schools.
Maggie was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph her entire life. She was involved at her church as a greeter and was co-chair of the church’s Funeral Meal Ministry for six years. She was involved in the annual Relay for Life for many years and was a ‘friendly visitor’ for Hospice at Home, and a Birthright prayer partner. She was a member of the Friendship Club of Stevensville and had served as president in 2012 and 2013. She lived at Whitcomb Towers for the last six years of her life, where she enjoyed listening to the Municipal Band concerts, and enjoying the Whitcomb activities.
She is survived by her 5 children: Sons David (Deborah) Slavicek, Benton Harbor; Steven (Mary) Slavicek, Stevensville; Richard (Debra) Slavicek, St. Joseph; Daughters Ann (John) Correll, Stevensville; Nancy (Robert) Pringle, Interlochen. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren: Laura (Casey) Alford, Matthew (Sheena) Slavicek, Mark (Lisa) Slavicek, Sarah (Adam) Tate, Emily (Scott) Hansson, Elizabeth (Jason) Cronkrite, Holly (Tim) Evans, Eric (Melissa) Slavicek, Michelle (Chris) Berry; Jennifer (Robert) Freridge, and Jacob and Isaac Pringle, and 27 great-grandchildren. Also, her best friend and cousin Mary Sanders.
Maggie was preceded in death by her husband Fred on March 15, 2008, her parents, brother Frank E. Runge, and a granddaughter Michelle Slavicek.
