Marilyn's Obituary

Marilyn S. Schrumpf (Avery), 74, of Galien, passed away on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Memorial Hospital, South Bend.

A celebration of life service will be held at 11 am on Friday, October 14, 2022, at Swem Chapel, 301 W. Front St., Buchanan. Burial will follow at Galien Cemetery. Visitation will take place from 4-8 pm on Thursday, October 13, also at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made in care of Laurie Wandland to be utilized to support her grandchildren’s future endeavors in her memory. Marilyn was born on January 28, 1948, to Charles and Caroline (Zachary) Avery in Benton Harbor. She graduated from Hartford High School in 1966. On March 27, 1971, Marilyn married Richard D. Schrumpf. Together they had four children, and she enjoyed being a homemaker and helping on the family farm. When Richard passed unexpectedly in 1986, she began working at Galien Schools. While working, Marilyn went back to school in 1988, receiving her Nursing Degree from Lake Michigan College in 1990. Marilyn then served as a nurse at Lakeland Hospital in Berrien Center for twenty-five years before retiring. Marilyn was devoted to her family and their opportunity for success and happiness. Through her example, she set the tone for the family’s perseverance, strong work ethic, pride and compassion. She was an incredibly supportive and caring person, who would move mountains for those she loved. Above all, Marilyn enjoyed being a mother to her children, grandchildren, and all whom she encountered.

Marilyn is survived by her children, Susan (Rodney Roberts) Schrumpf, Debbie (Steve Johnson) Schrumpf, Laurie (Jed) Wandland, and special daughter, Ruthie; grandchildren, Isaac Schrumpf, Dean Roberts, Michael Wandland, and Olivia Wandland; sister, Sheila (Don) Tillman; sisters-in-law, Sharon Overhiser, Doris Schrumpf, Ruth Schrumpf and brother-in-law, Arnold Tillman. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Schrumpf; son, Eric Schrumpf; sisters, Pam Champ, Christine Tillman and brother, Larry Avery.
