Mark's Obituary

Mark Houseman, 54, a resident of Niles, MI, passed peacefully into the presence of his Heavenly Father on March 2, 2024, at the University of Michigan hospital with family by his side.

A celebration of Mark’s life will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 at Decatur New Hope Community Church with Pastor Ross Tarantino officiating. The church is located at 319 1/2 West Delaware Street, Decatur, MI 49045, and the service will begin at 11:00 am. All are invited to stay for a time of food and fellowship following the service at the church.

Born April 30, 1969 to Lewis and Loraine Houseman, Mark was a graduate of Decatur High School and Western Michigan University. In 1993, he began his career at the University of Notre Dame, having just recently reached his 30 year milestone working in the Office of Information Technology. Additionally, Mark served as the building and grounds keeper for Decatur New Hope Community Church for over 40 years, never missing a Sunday of running the sound system and ensuring the church was ready for every church service, wedding, funeral, baby shower, and extracurricular event happening at the church. Mark was known as one who preferred to live out his life in Christ through quiet servanthood in all that he did. He was a dear friend to many and the person quick to help anyone in need, but never wanting any attention brought to his actions. Mark also enjoyed keeping a large garden every summer (with lots of kale!) and was an avid fan of the show M*A*S*H.

Mark is survived by his parents, Lewis and Loraine (DeFeyter) Houseman, and sister, Elaine Mroczek (Dan). Although Mark’s disease progression was relatively brief, he calmly and practically fought with immense strength and courage. Mark’s family wishes to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support they have received during his illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mark’s memory to Gideons International (https://www.gideons.org/donate), Decatur New Hope Community Church, or consider donating the gift of blood, platelets, or financial support to American Red Cross (https://www.redcross.org/donate/blood-services-donation.html) or the gift of being a match for someone through the National Marrow Donor Program (https://bethematch.org).
