Mary's Obituary

Mary Katherine O’Rourke, formerly of South Haven, passed away on December 20,2023 at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo. Mary was born on March 26, 1951, in South Haven, Michigan to George and Martha Warner Hinz.

Mary graduated from South Haven High School in 1969 and later attended Michigan State University for one year before transferring to Jackson Community College where she earned her Associate degree in Nursing in 1978. She started her nursing career at Coldwater Hospital in ICU and then in 1988 moved to Hillsdale Hospital as an ER Nurse and later a surgical nurse. Mary moved to Arizona in 2008 and was a surgical nurse at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Phoenix until her retirement in 2018. Mary was an avid reader, bird watcher, and nature photographer, and was an excellent cook. Mary was very devoted to her family and made a huge network of friends throughout her life and nursing career, most recently at Ridge Creek in the Heritage Community in Kalamazoo. She will be deeply missed.

Mary is survived by her husband David O’Rourke, his children: Tony (Melanie) O’Rourke, Helen (Bob) Smedo, and Ruth (Eric) Ramsower and their families, former husband Gary Nye, sons: Nathan (Ann) Nye, Tyler (Alison) Nye; and grandchildren: Savannah Nye and Ava Nye. Mary is also survived by sister Janice (Dennis) Burke and brother John (Emily Garber) Hinz. Mary was preceded in death by her parents and brother Gregory Hinz.

A visitation for Mary will be held on Friday, June 14, 2024, at Filbrandt Chapel, 1076 S. Bailey Ave, South Haven, Michigan, 49090 from 11 a.m. until the time of the Memorial Service at 12 p.m. Mary will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven, Michigan.
