Mary's Obituary

Mary Margaret Murdock, 76, of Portage, MI, formerly of Alexandria, VA, passed away on Monday, April 21, 2025, at her residence. Arrangements have been entrusted to Starks & Menchinger Chapel and Cremation Services. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held Friday, June 20, at 11AM at Westwood Christian Reformed Church, 620 N. Hampton Rd., Kalamazoo, MI, with Pastor Mike Koetje officiating, as well as Reverend Dr. Larry Hayword from Westminster Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, VA. Burial will be held at a later date at Galien Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Westwood Christian Reformed Church. Mary was born on September 5, 1948, in Okemos, MI, to Edward & Margaret (Payne) Murdock. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1966. She continued her education by attending Western Michigan University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in education, graduating in 1970. Following college, Mary worked as an elementary teacher for Plainwell School for four years before she began her career in Washington D.C. for the Federal Government in the Department of Education as a Department Leader. Mary was employed with them until her retirement 30 years later. After retirement, Mary loved spending time traveling the world; often making Europe a priority when traveling. When she wasn’t jet-setting on vacations, Mary enjoyed spending time with her family and friends or snuggling with her cats. She was very active with her Alexandria HOA, serving as President; as well as holding other titles.

Mary is survived by her sister, Karen Murdock; nieces, Sandra (Brian) Markee and Tracy Seppala; nephews, Tom (Hannah) Willauer, Kevin (Jiravann) Murdock, and Norm (Bridget) Murdock; and many great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents, Edward & Margaret; brother, Norman Murdock; and nephew, Tony Murdock.
