Max's Obituary
Max Hartman Campbell passed away on June 4, 2025, at the age of 86. Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, Max spent the majority of his life in Dowagiac, where he left a lasting mark as a math teacher and tennis coach at Dowagiac Public Schools.
Max had a sharp mind and a wry sense of humor. He didn’t suffer fools, preferred the road less traveled, and tolerated life’s quirks. He was an avid collector of memorabilia, a lover of trivia and games of chance, and a lifelong fan of oldies music. He spent many enjoyable hours following the Detroit Lions and Tigers and the University of Michigan football. In the last months of his life, he recaptured the joy of spending time with family.
Surviving are his son, Scott (Terri) Campbell; daughter, Melanie (Joe) Gardner; two grandchildren, Nicholas (Alexa) and Kendall; and two great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Ford and Daisy (Betz) Campbell; brother, Jack Campbell; and wife, Carla Campbell.
In keeping with Max’s wishes, no formal ceremony will be held. To honor his memory and in recognition of the battles he and so many close to him have faced, the family suggests donations be made to the American Cancer Society in his name. Arrangements were entrusted to Clark Chapel and Cremation Services - Starks Family Funeral Homes, Dowagiac. To share a memory or message of condolence, please visit Max’s personalized page at www.clarkch.com.
Max lived his life on his own terms — with intelligence, grit, and a touch of rebellion. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.
