Papa's Obituary
Michael John Gagliardo Sr., affectionately known as Papa by his grandchildren, of St. Joseph, passed away on Tuesday August 27, 2024, at Corewell Health Merlin & Carolyn Hanson Hospice Center.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 AM, on Saturday August 31, 2024, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 Delaware, Benton Harbor. Burial to follow at Hickory Bluff Cemetery. A visitation will be held at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Road, St. Joseph on Friday, August 30, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, a Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Memorials may be made to Hanson Hospice House or to St. John & St Bernard Parish. Friends wishing to send a condolence may do so at www.starks-menchinger.com.
Michael was born on August 23, 1936, to John and Molly (Tragna) Gagliardo in Benton Harbor, MI. He spent his childhood, along with his sister Rosalie, in Benton Harbor, and attended St. John’s Catholic School. Following his graduation from high school, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served for a few years in Korea before receiving an honorable discharge.
He married Adrienne Anzalone on June 10, 1961, and together they raised two children: Michael Gagliardo Jr. & Ann Gagliardo. After a successful 30-year career as an oil salesman, he decided to pursue the family tradition in the shoe cobbler business, opening his own shoe repair shop in 1989. After 22 years of working with his hands, he sold the shop and retired in 2011 at the age of 75.
Michael is survived by his children Michael Gagliardo Jr. and Ann Gagliardo of Saint Joseph, MI; his four grandchildren, Travis Worden, Adrianna Lalley (Adam Lalley), Jordan Gagliardo and Gabriella Worden; and his newly born great-granddaughter, Lola Lalley.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Adrienne; sister Rosalie Anzalone; parents, John and Molly Gagliardo; brother-in law, Stephen Anzalone; and mother-in-law Ann Anzalone.
