Patricia's Obituary

Beloved wife, Patricia Matthys, 73, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2024 at home in Saint Joseph, MI. with her husband and daughter by her side.
She was born October 7, 1950, to Raymond and Irene Depauw in Newark, New York. She is survived by her devoted husband of 38 years, Richard, and her daughter, Kari Ann Freling Crook married to Ted, her stepdaughters, Sarah Ann Nicolet married to Alain, Kelly Marie Jefferies married to Daniel, her granddaughters CJ and Ruthie, her six step-grandchildren, Annabelle, Autumn, Emilie, Eli, Ezra and Zach, her sister Margaret Embry married to Will, and her brother Dave Depauw engaged to Brenda Thurston.

Patricia attended Newark HS and graduated from Alfred State College where she was an active member of PiNu Epsilon Sorority. Pat excelled in her work with Sarah Coventry, Rochester Plaza Stouffer Hotel, Geneva on the Lake Resort and Hallmark Cards, but her heart and soul was fulfilled being Grammy to her two youngest granddaughters, CJ, 5, and Ruthie, 2.

Pat lived with joy, light, eternal optimism and a ready laugh. She loved her travels with Rich, enjoying their time exploring the beaches, wineries and eateries of Michigan, the magical deserts and saguaros of Arizona and Florida's Sanibel Island. Her delight in the sunrises over the Gulf and the shell studded beaches found them walking on the beach before dawn on their way to the Sanibel lighthouse. She shared her treasured shells and stones after painting them, gifting them to her loved ones, or hiding them for strangers to find.
Pat made everybody feel special, whether they were watching football together or sharing happy hour. Pat, with ease, created appetizers, desserts and beverages that were plentiful and delicious. But her precious time was with Kari and her two granddaughters, creating memories while reading together and playing. Pat was their biggest cheerleader during their gymnastics, dance and figure skating events. She couldn't have been more proud.

Pat was a strong and gracious lady, loved by so many. Her heart was generous and she'll be missed terribly.

In keeping with Pat's wishes, she has been cremated. A memorial will be held at Starks & Menchinger Funeral Home on Thursday February 15, 2024, from 2:00 – 3:30 with the service starting at 3:30.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made to The Multiple Myeloma Foundation at themmrf.org/get-involved.
