Ray's Obituary

Ray Gerald Sernau, 65, of St Joseph, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 23, 2023.

A Celebration of Life Eternal will be held 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Grace Lutheran Church 404 E. Glenlord Rd., St. Joseph, with Rev. Joshua Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Crystal Springs Cemetery in Benton Harbor. Friends may visit with the family from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. Ray was born to Raymond & Edna (Brown) Sernau on January 23, 1958. He was a life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church. Ray attended Grace Lutheran School and graduated in 1976 from Michigan Lutheran High School. He was employed as a custodian at Grace Lutheran Church from 1972 until 1987 and also worked for many years as custodian at Schneck’s Supermarket in St. Joseph. In 1987, he joined the family business, Brown’s Locksmiths & Hardware, where he was currently employed. He also did snowplowing for many years. Ray enjoyed preparing lots of food for family gatherings, especially German Potato Salad. Ray was a member of ALOA-Associated Locksmiths of America.

Ray is survived by his siblings-Cheryl (Doug) Anthony, Gerry Sernau, Kerry (Vicki) Sernau & Lori (Brian) Shank; nieces & nephews-Rachel (Jon) Arndt, Rebecca (Matthew) Pranger, Matthew (Terri) Sernau, Kelly (Bryan) Scholtes, Eric (Stephanie) Sernau, Katherine Shank, & Emily (Lucas) Callies; and great-nieces & nephews-Nathaniel, Grace & Josiah Arndt, Sierra & Christian Pranger, Brett Sernau, Addison Scholtes & Owen Sernau. Ray was preceded in death by his parents Raymond & Edna Sernau.
