Richard's Obituary

Richard G. Kohler, 88, of Decatur, walked into the arms of his loving Savior on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Dick’s family will receive guests from 10am until the time of service at 11am, Friday, January 19, 2024 at Decatur Bible Church, 80797 M-51, Decatur, MI 49045. Burial to follow at Charleston Cemetery, Decatur. Memorial contributions may be given to the Decatur Bible Church at the address above, or to Heartland Hospice, 8075 Creekside Drive #120, Portage, MI 49024.

Dick was born February 20, 1935 in Mishawaka, IN to Harris and Gladys (Darling) Kohler. After graduating high school, joined the Navy, proudly serving his country for several years before his honorable discharge. He married the love of his life, Glenda Wolf, on June 9, 1956 in Lawrence, MI. In his younger years, Dick enjoyed bowling and spent many years on a league. During this time, he worked as a chemical operator for UpJohn, retiring from that position. After his retirement, Dick went to work for Adam’s Hardware, a “part-time job” that he truly enjoyed. Dick was an active member with the Decatur/Hamilton Fire Dept., EMT, a bus driver for Decatur Public Schools and was an original member of the Decatur ambulance service. Dick was a huge Detroit Lions fan and was fortunate enough to see them win their first playoff game in over 30 years! He also loved spending time hunting, fishing, and doing work around the yard; but nothing compared to how much he loved spending time with his family. You could often find him out in his lawn chair, watching the world, and having meaningful life chats with his son. On Sundays, you couldn’t miss Dick in “his pew” at Decatur Bible Church, a proud member he was for 57 years.

Dick will be missed by his wife of 67 years, Glenda (Wolf) Kohler; his sons, Doug Kohler, and Gregory (Jennifer) Kohler; and his grandchildren, Tyler Kohler, Joseph (Amanda) Ketchem, and Keith Sanders. He is preceded in death by his seven siblings; and his parents.
