Richard's Obituary

Richard A. (Dick) Schueneman, 82, of Benton Harbor, passed away on Monday, January 10, 2022, at Spectrum Health-Lakeland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at 10:30AM, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 555 E. Delaware Ave., Benton Harbor. A luncheon will follow in the Church social hall. Burial will take place at Sacred Heart of Mary Cemetery in Dowagiac following the luncheon. Friends may visit with the family on Monday, January 17, 2022, from 4PM until 7PM at Starks & Menchinger Chapel, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. A rosary will be recited at 6:30PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Lake Michigan Catholic School Fund, PO Box 32, St. Joseph, MI 49085, SS. John & Bernard Parish, 580 Columbus Ave., Benton Harbor, MI, 49022, or Salivation Army: Benton Harbor Corps, 233 Michigan St., Benton Harbor, MI 49022. Richard was the eldest child born on January 8, 1940, to Harry & Leona (Walsh) Schueneman in Evergreen Park, IL. He attended Leo High School in Chicago then moved with his family to a farm in Berrien County (Spinks Corners), Michigan his Junior year. He graduated from St. John Catholic High School and then continued his education at Michigan State University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Homology and Vegetable Production. After graduation Richard took a job selling agricultural chemicals and married Carol Carmody (RN). Soon they established a farm operation in Bristol, IN where they raised 5 children, operated a U-Pick orchard and commercial cider mill for over 20 years. After retiring from farming, Richard hauled heavy machinery as an owner-operator contracted to several firms for over 20 more years. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church and the Benton Harbor Moose Lodge 1570. Richard had a passion for gardening, especially growing roses and dahlias. He enjoyed sharing the blooms with many family and friends (who also often found themselves weeding the gardens). He was an avid reader and loved sharing his library with anyone who needed a book.

Richard is survived by his children, Kathy (Kirk) Christensen of St. Joseph, COL (Ret) Rich (Deb) Schueneman of Bel Air, MD, Therese (Bill) Hawkins of Columbus, IN, JoAnn (Karl) Gordon of Richmond, VA, Janice (Rick) Fuller of Nolensville, TN; grandchildren Erika, Nathan, Tyler, Dillon, Jack, Cooper, Sydney, Madison and Karoline; siblings, Tom (Martha) Schueneman, Suellen (Mike) Siglow, Herb (Gaylene) Schueneman, Bill (Pam) Schueneman, Jim (Elaine) Schueneman, Joe (Christy) Schueneman, John (Beth) Schueneman, George Schueneman, Louis Diaz; and brother-in-law Larry Spitzley.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Harry & Leona Schueneman; his ex-wife Carol (Carmody) Schueneman and sister Kathie Spitzley.
