Sandra's Obituary

November 11, 1945 in Gary, IN, life began for the one and only Sandra Rae Pye, the baby girl of Velma Allen Lasenby and daughter of the late George Pye. Sandra Rae moved to Southeastern Michigan with her mother’s family and would graduate from Bangor High School. She then matriculated to Western Michigan University, with the accomplishment of being the first woman in her family to graduate to college and then later, earn a Master’s degree.

Starting a new life in Kalamazoo MI, she married Fred Lee Dunnigan Sr. and immediately started their family with the birth of their daughter Desiree… or to all that loved her, Desi. Soon to follow was little Fred Dunnigan, Jr… or Junebug as he is affectionately known. A social worker with the Kalamazoo Juvenile Detention Center, she worked to try to make a difference in the lives of troubled youth.

A highlight in her life was moving to Jamaica in the early eighties. She was so proud of the land she acquired and often showed off the watermelons she grew. San was always ready to party and have a good time! A family get together was not complete without her “Sananigens”. Full of sharp wit and spit fire mouth to match, she could entertain for hours on end.

After a well fought battle with an illness, she made a peaceful transition in Paw Paw, MI. She is now in company of the family she so loved. Those that preceded her in death are: Her parents Velma Allen and George Pye. Her husband, Fred Dunnigan, Sr. and daughter, Desiree Wilson. Brothers: Richard (Olivia) Lasenby, Sr., Charles Lasenby, Lowell (Martha) Lasenby, Melvin (Janet) Lasenby, Emmett (Elnore) Lasenby, Walter Wayne (Joan) Strong, Ronald Strong. Her sisters, Marlene Williams (Edgar) and Charlene Lasenby.

Her legacy is left to and never be forgotten by her son, Fred Dunnigan, Jr. Grandchildren: Cierra Crenshaw, Datuan Johnson, Adrian Wilson, Antwann Wilson, Ricky Wilson, Keon Tolliver, Dequanate Tolliver, Keyshawn Echols, and Yarrl Campell. And host of nieces and nephews left to cherish her memory.

The Wake will be on Thursday, September 22, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. and the Funeral Service will follow immediately after at 5:00 p.m. at The Filbrandt Chapel in South Haven with Pastor Henry Allen officiating.
