Suella's Obituary

Suella VanDyke (Joyner) was born February 24, 1920 in Decatur, IL to Minora and Clarence Joyner Sr. She went home to be with the Lord on November 23, 2024.

Suella attended McCosh Elementary School and Englewood H.S. After High School, she worked at the local Walgreens where she met Dwight “Donald” VanDyke. She took courses in Political Science at WMU, CMU, and Lake Michigan College.

Suella and Donald VanDyke married in 1946, and later moved to Covert, MI in 1948. Together they had 3 children (Janice Lewis, Dale VanDyke, & Alan VanDyke) whom all preceded her in death. Her husband Donald, sister’s Vasti Patterson, Bessie Hickombottom, Barbara Winans and brother, Walter Mackey, also preceded her in death.

Suella is survived by her Brother Clarence Joyner Jr., Grandchildren: Mark Moore, Eric Lewis, Kevin Lewis and Leah VanDyke and Great Grandchildren: Mark Scott, Kevin Lewis Jr. & Ariyah Lewis. She also has several Nieces, Nephews, and TOO MANY friends and acquaintances to count!

Suella held many different jobs. She was the township secretary for several years. She also served on the South Haven Township Board for 5-6 years. At Covert Public Schools, she was a teacher, librarian, and bookstore attendant for 45 years. 25 of which she served on the school board. Suella retired after the 2002 school year at age 82.

She had been a faithful member of St. Basil's Church in South Haven for 70+ years.

In her younger years, she enjoyed playing tennis, baseball, soccer, bowling, and golf. She knew & touched the lives of hundreds of people and will be dearly missed, but we can rejoice in the long life she lived & knowing she is with the Lord and reunited with so many that went before her!

A visitation for Suella will be held Saturday, December 7, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. at Filbrandt Chapel. Following the visitation friends and family will process to St. Basil Catholic Church for the Funeral Service at 12:00 p.m. Suella will be laid to rest at Covert Cemetery in Covert.
