Vern's Obituary

Vernon E. “Vern” Shoff, 89, of St. Joseph, passed away on September 20, 2022.

Vern was born on July 15, 1933, to Vernon & Carrie (Phillips) Shoff in Benton Harbor. He graduated from Benton Harbor High School and then was drafted into the United States Navy. He proudly served his country on the SS Shadwell, with deployments to Cuba, the Caribbean Islands, and Greenland. On September 8, 1962, Vern married the love of his life Marcia Jaskiewicz at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Vern worked as a printer for Zenith Company before starting retirement in 1992. He also owned Shoff’s Mowing, a lawn service for over 20 years and repaired typewriters for local businesses. He enjoyed restoring his 1955 Packard, being on the lake, and especially talking with people. His most cherished time was spent with his family, especially with his grandchildren.

Vern is survived by his wife Marcia Shoff; daughters, Colleen (Jeff) Burch of Stevensville and Tina (Trent) Renfro of Sperry, OK; grandchildren, Morgan Roberts and Connor Roberts; and many nieces and nephews.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Bonnie Schmalbach and Arlene Fast, as well as his sister-in-law Chris (Jaskiewicz) Glendening and brother-in-law Michael Birk.

A memorial service will be held on Monday, September 26, 2022, at 1PM, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 220 Church St., St. Joseph, with Fr. Joseph Abraham officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, September 25, 2022, from 2PM until 4PM, at Starks & Menchinger Chapel & Cremation Services, 2650 Niles Rd., St. Joseph. A prayer service will be held at 3:30PM. Memorial contributions may be made to Caring Circle, 4025 Health Park Lane, St. Joseph. On behalf of Vern’s family, we want to extend our sincere gratitude to all of his caretakers, especially Linda, Heather, and Nancy. Additionally, a special heartfelt thanks to Vern’s friend, Jim, for his many years of friendship.
