Viola's Obituary
Viola L. Hill, 87, of South Haven, passed away peacefully at Douglas Cove Health and Rehabilitation on September 25, 2024. She was born on June 11, 1937 in South Haven to the late Clarence and Nellie Mae (Springett) Barringer.
On June 27, 1953 Viola married Gary E. Hill Sr., who preceded her in death in 2004. They loved each other with a devotion that stood the test of time. Together they raised five children, Rosie (Dale) Covey, Debra (Mark) Burnett, Gary E. Hill Jr. (Kelly), Teresa Bierhalter, and Brenda (Chuck) Diemer. Also surviving are grandchildren David, Chris (Marcy), Jessica (Chris), Elizabeth (Joe), Megan (Nick), Gary III (Ann-Marie), and Kacey (Robbie). Great-grandchildren are Tre (Amber), Tyce (Alexis), Quentin, Gavin, Ashlynn, Everett, Maverick, Colton, Katerina, and Alaric. Great-great grandchildren are Delilah and Lilith. She is survived by her siblings Donald and Clarence Jr. “Sonny”. Viola was also preceded in death by her sister Ramona Schultz, son-in-laws Richard “Butch” Raven and Philip Bierhalter II, and great-granddaughter, Lucy Orlaske.
There was nothing Viola loved more than being surrounded by her loved ones. Over the years, she and her husband Gary enjoyed camping, motorcycle riding, and snowmobiling. They savored long evening rides to soak in the Michigan scenery and frequently traveled up north in their RV in search of morel mushrooms. Viola loved the outdoors, never batting an eye at yard work or long walks. The search for unique rocks, catching a glimpse of hummingbirds, and Elvis Presley were at the top of her favorites list. She was so proud of her family and loved them immensely. Viola retired from South Haven Conference Center after over 50 years in housekeeping, and was a member of the Red Hat Society and Kibbie Christian Reformed Church. She leaves behind an enduring legacy of love and will remain treasured by all who knew her.
Friends and family will meet at Chambers Cemetery for a graveside service on October 11, 2024 at 2PM. Pastor Vern Swieringa of Kibbie Christian Reformed Church will be officiating the service.
Memorials may be made to the Al-Van Humane Society or Kibbie Christian Reformed Church.
Arrangements have been entrusted to Filbrandt Chapel of Starks Family Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 269-637-0333.
