I had the honor of becoming a Gillette when I married Brian. When we first fell in love, Brian told me, "I'm not half the man my father is." I found that stunning and humble of him, as I couldn't imagine such a thing, but it shows the respect, admiration, and love Brian had for his dad.
In 2013, our daughter, Katie, saw a book she begged me for called Grandpa's Memories of Growing Up. I had the pleasure of using that book with Katie over the next several visits to conduct a series of interviews with Grandpa that we will treasure. From those talks that he shared his history with us, and from the past nearly 23 years of knowing him, here are some things I want to share about Dad.
Dad and Mom met when he was eighteen years old, and she was almost sixteen years old. He was a senior in high school. He said, "I think when we met, we were a couple." Mom was the great love of his life.
Dad lived a life of integrity. He was devoted to his family and a true gentleman. He had a great sense of humor. He was proud of his sons and delighted with his grandchildren and also with the news of his first great-grandchild to be born later this month.
Dad was a Christian and believed in eternal life through Jesus Christ, which he is enjoying now with his parents, our son--his grandson, Andrew, who he has now finally gotten to meet and hold, and the other believers who have gone before him, into the true joy of the Lord.
When thinking about Dad, this Proverb comes to mind and rings true: "Grandchildren are the crowning glory of the aged; Parents are the pride of their children." We, his family loved and respected him immensely, and he will be greatly missed.
