We would like to extend our condolences to the family. Nancy was one of the friendliest persons I knew. She was always right there at the corner waiting for kids. I always seen a book in her hands,no matter where I saw her , walking , crossing guard station, or the ball park. She was a great Mother and a Great Grandma to her grandkids. She sure did support the boys in their ball games. Last year she started giving our 3 year old granddaughter , Juliana, S tootsie roll pop sucker every morning when her dad and her would stop at he stop sign on the way here to our house to be babysat everyday... She will be greatly missed.... God Bless the family. Ron and Sue Washegesic.

when you see Nancy coming down the hall with her layers of coats on you never knew what she had under there...a kitten, a bird with a broken wing, a baby squirrel, a batch of her wonderful cookies, a picture or article about one of her grandchildren...I've seen her with them all. She cared, shared, helped anyone who asked...but most of all, she made working with kids look so easy!!! Bless you Nancy. You will be missed by ALL!!!

Nancy was more than just a crossing guard. She was an Angel. Those who knew her, knew she loved her job and truly cared about every child she shepherded safety across our streets. I will miss her smile and wave. I will especially miss her gift of "cookies" each Christmas. Enjoy the Heavenly fruits of your labors Nancy! Fly!

Nancy has been my neighbor my whole life. I can honestly say that she is one of the kindest people that I have ever known. She was a g.i.v.e.r.. She opened her door to anyone, or anything, that needed her. Everyone from a hungry stray cat looking for a meal, a kid trying to cross the street after school, a neighbor looking for a cup of sugar, or me: a little girl who needed someone to walk her to school. Nancy was always there for people. Her kindness, generosity, and good spirit are unparalleled. She will certainly be missed.

Dear Rhodes Family: I'm so very sorry for your loss and the loss it has placed on our community. Nancy was a person with a truly kind and warm heart. She loved her job and truly cared about each student she had any contact with. South Haven has lost a wonderful member of our community. I think we all can learn from her kind and gentle spirit.

To Casey and family, your mother was a special woman. Just like the sun would rise every morning so would your mother be on the corner of Center and Elkenburg. She made every child feel special. No matter what color, shape, or size. There are not many people like that. To see such a warm face before going to school was truely special. My prayers are with you. May God bless and comfort you.

Nikki, Casey, and family, I have known Nancy for more years then I can remember, and all of those years she has been a "true" friend. She always extended herself to each and everyone of the kids she helped cross the street, or "us" her other kids. Your mom will truely be missed, and the South Haven Police Dept. have lost a loyal employee, which has sadden all of us. It just won't be the same on Kalamazoo and Elkenburg with out her there.... My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

What a shock to hear of Nancy's passing. She and I would talk of "old" times when we were just kids and then of our families when we grew up. Nancy was such a kind giving person who loved her children with all her heart and soul. Just talking about them and the grandkids could put a smile on her face. That smile and kind words will be so missed. What a special person. My deepest condolences to all her family.

We are very sorry to have learned of this tremendous loss to the Rhodes family.I have known Nancy probably since the age of 4 or 5. She was friends with my father, as well as my Aunt Emily and other family members when they used to be here. Nancy has alway's been such a friendly and upbeat individual and it just is not going to be the same not seeing her every morning after I drop my little girl off at her sitters. I know this pain all to well from having lost both my parents years before we ever could have imagined, so I know the hurt and devistation all to well. I have never heard Nancy speak an unkind word to anyone, and her love for kids has always shined through. There is no amount of words I could ever say to you to let you know how sorry we are for your loss. Our prayers and thoughts are with your family daily. There is no doubt that she will be missed! May God hold and comfort all of you during this time and always. Sincerely, Elaine and Olivia Goodrich (Carter.)

My Dear Aunt Nancy, I've known you all of my life, but it was only three years ago I learned you were my Aunt. And a special one at that, we bonded immediately, you were my life line to my father. When I was in an identity crisis, you were right there helping me through it. Thank you, I Love you and miss you very much. You are home with God and the rest of your loved ones, and I know I will see you again some day. I know you are still and Angel. Your Loving Niece~Tina

To all the children and grandchildren of Nancy's, Your mom and grandma was truly a wonderful person. She loved her job and cared for all of the little children. She was faithfully evdryday on the corner to help them across the street. I will miss working with her on RIOT (reading instead of television) prizes. She helped for years sorting all the prizes and putting them in bags. She was great. Be proud of her.

My condolences to Bart and Casey and all of the Rhoades family. I was stunned when I first heard of Nancy's passing and cried. Then when Bart called and confirmed it, I was hard pressed not to start crying again. I worked with Nancy for many years and know that being a crossing guard was more than a job to her. She took her responsibilities very seriously and was a real shepherd to all the children. Only her own children and grandchildren were more important to her. They lit up her life. The counted cross stitch she made for me fifteen years ago still hangs above my desk in the bookstore, and will always be one of my treasures. Always, Gloria Veltman

I was a "walker" during my 5th grade year at Central. Nancy was the crossing guard. One day my mom was able to pick me up and as we turned from Broadway to Superior the car stalled. I was mortified and instantly hid on the floorboard. When my mom rolled down the window, Nancy said to me, "Don't worry Suzy, the kids don't know you're in here and I won't say a word, just stay down". She then gave me a friendly wink to seal her promise. In the days and years after that afternoon she'd always give me that wink when she saw me. Nancy's service for the safety of our young, with no desire for recognition, was truly extraordinary. I pray Lord that Nancy's family and friends feel your love as they celebrate the life of this wonderful woman.

To all of Nancy's family, Nancy was truly a warm, friendly, genuine person. From the days when she was my crossing guard 30 years ago or so, she always had a kind word to say. Whether it was at the ball field or in the gym, she would always remember your name when you chatted with her. She is one of South Haven's treasures and will be missed.

I am thinking about your family during this difficult time. Nancy was a fixture at the corner by Central School and Lincoln School. She cared about kids and would stop by Lincoln to let the teachers know the kids that were having trouble finding their way to school on time. She always had a smile on her face, a kind word for others and a book in her hand. She will be missed by many.

I was very sad to read that Nancy had passed. My family and I will miss her warm smiles and friendly chats. She always kept a watchful eye over my children, pooches and home. She was always quick with a compliment on my hydrangeas or an update on the family of cardinals that share our home. She was a treasure and will be missed dearly.
