Robert Lee Howard Jr.

Robert Lee “Bobby” Howard Jr., 60, of Springfield, Illinois, formerly of South Haven, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, February 10 at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

He was born September 25, 1948 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert Lee and Irene (Smith) Howard Sr. Robert attended both Covert and South Haven public school graduating from South Haven High School in 1967. Robert served his country in the U. S. Marines in Vietnam War from 1968 - 1970. Robert worked as a Police Officer in the 70’s becoming the first Black Police Officer in South Haven. Robert loved music and was a loving stern father. Robert was full of life, always smiling and telling jokes.

He is preceded in death by his father – Robert Lee Howard Sr..

He is survived by his mother – Irene Smith of South Haven, Michigan. four children – Robert Lee Howard III and Charlette Slack both of Springfield, Illinois, John Hughes of Kalamazoo, Michigan and Christopher Morse of Battle Creek, Michigan. Five grandchildren – Toni Strong, Taryn Slack, Taylor Slack, Jona Hughes and Robert Howard. one great grandchild- Zakiyah Williams. Sisters – Lola Evans and Sharon Howard both of Kalamazoo, Michigan, Ruby Evans of South Haven, Michigan, Marie R Howard, Anita Howard, Barbara Howard Evans, and Rita Howard all of Illinois. Brothers – Howard Evans, Jones (Jimmy) Howard, Charles Howard, Samuel Howard, Robert Howard, Ronald Howard, and Ricky Howard. A host of nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Although Robert’s time had passed, it was filled with laughter and everlasting love from all who were fortunate to have known him. His family understands that he tried to do his best in life and for his family, and for that we are proud of him. We are comforted to know that his pain has ended and his peace will be everlasting.
