Phillip's Obituary
Phillip M. Spencer, a man whose kindness was as vast as his sunflower garden, passed away on March 9, 2025, at the age of 72. Born on April 17, 1952, adopted by Winston and Betty Spencer, Phil grew up with the solid grounding of farm life, a foundation he returned to in his later years.
Phil’s journey took him from the fields to the halls of academia, earning an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University and an MBA from Indiana University. He then embarked on a remarkable 40-plus-year career as a Systems Analyst at Whirlpool Corporation. Let’s just say he knew his way around a spreadsheet.
Beyond his professional life, Phil was a man of many passions. He spent countless hours cultivating his beloved sunflower garden, a testament to his patience and love of nature. He was also a volleyball enthusiast, playing on the Whirlpool league for over 35 years and later becoming a dedicated spectator of high school and college games. He could spot a dig from a mile away.
Phil was a devoted father and grandfather. He cherished his time with his daughter, Jennifer (Edward) Spencer, and his grandsons, Edward and Trey (DeGrange). He was the kind of grandpa who always had a story, a smile, and maybe a slightly too generous handful of candy.
Phil was a man of great integrity, known for his kindness, generosity, wisdom, and respect. He was, quite simply, a good man.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Winston and Betty, sisters Regina (Hiatt) and Barbara (Duncan), brother Marshall (Luse) and his four children from a previous marriage, Emily Kate (Spencer) and the triplets.
He is survived by his daughter Jennifer (Edward) Spencer, grandsons Edward and Trey (DeGrange), brother Lee (Spencer), and sister Martha (Luse).
A private luncheon to celebrate Phil’s life will be held on his birthday, April 17th.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Phil’s memory to Habitat for Humanity or the Council on Aging, organizations that reflect his generous spirit and commitment to community.
