Becky's Obituary
Rebecca D (Becky) Doan, 78, of Benton Harbor, Michigan joined her loving husband on February 15, 2025.
She was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan on November 15, 1946 to Harvey and Linda (Hein) Duncan. Becky graduated from Benton Harbor High School in 1964 and married her high school sweetheart, David Doan on August 10, 1968 with whom she was happily married for 52 years before he passed in September 2020. Becky had a big smile and an even bigger personality that will be greatly missed.
Becky loved dancing and performing, which was evident throughout her full life. She started baton twirling when she was 5 years old and went on to win many awards and championships in the sport, including the National Twirling Championship. She twirled at Benton Harbor High School, where she finished her years as Head Majorette for the marching band. Becky also won awards for hula dancing and dancing competitions at the House of David.
She attended Western Michigan University on a full ride scholarship for twirling, where she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in 1968. Becky then joined her alma mater in September 1968 where she taught Physical Education and Health for over 40 years. She was instrumental in starting the Pom Pom Squad for the band and was their director throughout her tenure at BHHS. She loved the sport and shared that love with all “her girls”, many of whom commented that she was more than a coach, but also a mentor, friend, and considered a second mother. Becky always gave more than she received and tried to improve the lives of those she touched.
Becky also had a huge love for animals. She won many awards showing her horse, Fury, and you could always find her hanging out at the sheriff posse barn at the Berrien County Youth Fair. She gave generously to animal rescue groups and always had one of her beloved schnauzers next to her.
Her parents and husband preceded her in death, but she leaves extended family members and many friends to remember her.
A memorial gathering for Becky was held on February 25, 2025 from 5-7pm at Starks & Menchinger Chapel in St. Joseph, Michigan with many family members, friends, colleagues, and students in attendance. Many shared stories of her brilliant smile, contagious laugh, and love of life. For a lasting memory, donations may be made to the Human Society of Southwestern Michigan or to the donor choice.
Though her name may fade from the lips of time, the imprint Becky leaves upon the heart of her loved ones and students remain entirely vivid---a testament to the depth of her spirit and the richness of her legacy.
