Dear Appleyard Family,
I am so sorry to learn of Aunt Allegra's passing. I will always remember her as a kind and caring aunt - one of the best of the last generation. My last visit with her was so good - she was so proud of the emailed letters and photographs she received from her family, proud to show me your caring for her.
Sincerely, Cousin John

I just heard now from my brother John about Allegra's passing. I'm so sad to hear about her loss. She was always very good about sending notes to us and trying to keep in contact. What a kind and thoughtful person this planet has now lost. I and my wife, Ellen, sincerely hope that she is now in an infinitely better place in the universe. Our best to all of the family. Time marches on. As John said, the last of a generation. Some day it will be us, the inevitability of passing years. Hopefully we have all tried to make things better for our future heirs. Take care all of you. Although we are separated by geography, I think we are united in spirit. Love you.

Dear Appleyard Family, Sorry to hear of your mom's passing. She was a joy to converse with. I remember many conversations with her as my son Brad raked the leaves in her yard. She had a wonderful life, may her memory live on thru you. Peace to all of you. Cathy

Over the last four years, Maxine and I have enjoyed fall camping tours that have taken us to every corner of the United States. One of the highlights of those trips has been to make our last stop at Van Buren State Park and spend time with Aunt Allegra. Re-connecting with the Appleyards and reminiscing about the family has been a wonderful experience for us. Leaving South Haven and heading home we would both marvel at how sharp minded she was and that her independence was an inspiration for our future. We are truly saddened by her passing, but we are delighted and honored to have been a relation. The world would be a much better place if we were all guided by her moral compass and compassion. She will be missed.

Dear Appleyard Family,
Our family visits to South Haven during the holiday season always included a visit to Rich and Allegraβs home. Mom and dad (Mary and Ben), and all of us boys, treasured those visits to their home. Our heartfelt condolences on Allegraβs passing. Love, Jim

Remembering Aunt Allegra
Allegra was one of my aunts and I remember her well. She and Richard had their house in South haven into which they put much love and work. They were very comfortable there and continued to live there as long as possible.
Allegra was, I discovered, an athlete. I scanned a picture of her from when she was on the 1932 South Haven high school basketball team.
When she and Richard were married, I found a photo of her with her new sisters (in law). I recall them all as a fond family with sisterly bonds of family and friendship.
When my mother died in 2001, our Green family received a graceful and sincere note from Allegra.
Borrowing from her note, we can say βpeace at lastβ. We will not mourn but celebrate a life well lived.
I guess the photos need to be added separately....
Love and condolences to her family

Slight correction to Dan's note. Our mom died in January of 2009. Our father died in 2001, prior to 9/11, thank God. So it was only 5 years ago that Allegra wrote that very sincere, coherent and thoughtful letter to us all. More testimony to how amazing she was!

As I think of Aunt Allegra a flood of fond memories of the entire Appleyard family rushes through my mind. I will always remember her as graceful, kind and sincere. And growing up in South Haven, I feel so blessed to have had such wonderful aunts and uncles in my life to help me understand the importance of a strong family. Yes, the last of the generation - and from an amazing family. Teddi and I send our condolences to Richard, Rhea, Ed, Mike and the entire Appleyard family. What a legacy.

I remember, as a child in South Haven, trekking from our rental home over to Aunt Allegra's to play in their basement rec room with Mike & Ed. She always had a snack for us. I was part of her family.
Recently, during the weekend of my parents internment, Diane & I were fortunate to spend several hours reminiscing with Allegra.
She was a strong, caring women, and I loved her.

I only met Allegra after I married into the Green clan but I have fond memories of her. There's a commercial on TV that asks what is the age of the oldest person you know. Allegra was that person, when we met her last. She was a spry, alert and perceptive 97 year old, who always sent thoughtful notes to you for any time you remembered her, including comments on your Christmas cards. She reminded me of my own Mother - opinionated but wise and thoughtful. She had a very good run...
